History

In 1854, Alliance was founded by the merging of three small communities called Williamsport, Freedom, and Liberty. A fourth community, Mount Union, was added to the group in 1888. Alliance was officially incorporated in 1889. It is believed that the city was named Alliance as an alliance was formed between the small communities to create a larger entity. Others believe that the name reflects the intersection of two major railroad lines, the Cleveland and Wellsville Railroad and the Ohio and Pennsylvania Railroad, in Alliance.

For much of the 20th century, the center of activity in Alliance revolved around the train station, as it was the city’s main transportation hub. The railroad played a vital role in the city’s ability to transport materials in and out of town.
